AFRICA – The World Poultry Foundation (WPF) has unveiled a comprehensive training module designed to assist small-scale poultry farmers in Africa in building low-cost, effective chicken shelters.
This initiative aims to improve farming methods and boost incomes for small-scale poultry producers across the continent.
The training materials, available for free in multiple languages, include videos, infographics, and flip charts, making them accessible and user-friendly for training and development organizations.
The training module provides detailed guidance on when and how chickens need to be housed. It offers low-cost ideas for constructing safe and comfortable poultry shelters, ensuring that these structures are clean and conducive to the health and productivity of the birds.
The resources emphasize practical, cost-effective solutions that small-scale farmers can easily implement.
Maureen Stickel, Director of International Program Development at the World Poultry Foundation, highlighted the broader impact of these resources.
“These training resources are designed to help small-scale poultry producers improve the productivity of their chickens, and thus the nutritional status of their families and communities. The launch of the series shows our commitment to supporting inclusive and sustainable poultry value chains that benefit both farmers and consumers,” she stated.
Comprehensive educational toolkit
The training module is part of the African Poultry Multiplication Initiative (APMI) Program, which aims to enhance the capacities of small-scale producers (SSPs).
The Small-scale Producer Training Resources were specifically created to provide SSPs with convenient visual guides to support dual-purpose poultry production. These resources are tailored to meet the unique needs of SSPs, who play a crucial role in local food systems and rural economies.
The SSP resources encompass a wide range of educational materials, guides, and videos covering various aspects of poultry production. They offer practical information and best practices to help farmers improve their poultry rearing techniques, enhance flock health and welfare, optimize feed management, and implement effective biosecurity measures.
The goal is to empower and support small-scale producers to succeed in the poultry industry, thereby strengthening local food systems and contributing to rural economic development.
By providing these valuable resources, the World Poultry Foundation aims to significantly impact the livelihoods of small-scale poultry farmers in Africa. The initiative is expected to enhance the productivity and sustainability of poultry farming, improve the nutritional status of families and communities, and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the region.
