TANZANIA – The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has been awarded the prestigious title of African Regulator of the Year, a resounding testament to its unwavering commitment to quality infrastructure and public health safeguards.

The recognition was bestowed upon TBS at the 13th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA), a highlight of the 8th ALM Africa Summit held on July 11, 2023, at The Dorchester Hotel in London, United Kingdom.

The summit’s theme, “New Opportunities for African Investments, Partnerships, and Collaborations,” set the stage for celebrating excellence in leadership and regulation across the continent.

The African Regulator of the Year Award was a well-deserved acknowledgment of TBS’s tireless efforts and remarkable achievements in strengthening Tanzania’s Quality Infrastructure (QI). This commitment to excellence has played a pivotal role in driving sustainable economic growth within the country.

Over the years, TBS has been at the forefront of safeguarding public health by implementing robust frameworks for standards development, enforcement, and quality management systems.

Their investment in laboratory testing capacity and accreditation has further solidified their role as a guardian against food risks, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Tanzanian population.

The honor was accepted on behalf of TBS by Prof. Othman Chande, the Board Chair, and Dr. Athuman Ngenya, the Director General. Their leadership and dedication have been instrumental in guiding TBS to new heights in regulatory excellence.

The Minister for Industry and Trade Dr Ashatu Kijaji commended the board and management for the efficiency and professionalism that helped in scooping the award.

“The award is a demonstration of the good job you are doing. But you need to remain firm in ensuring that goods and services’ standards are scaled up.

“Efficiency and hardworking have brought a positive image not only to the authority, but also in the business industry. It is also proving high level of professionalism in matters of standardization,” she said.

Ghana’s FDA recognized as Runner-Up

In addition to celebrating TBS’s achievement, the African Leadership Magazine recognized the Food & Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana as the Runner-Up in the African Regulator category.

This acknowledgment highlights the commitment of regulatory bodies across the continent to upholding quality standards and ensuring public health.

Ken Giami, the publisher of the African Leadership Magazine, emphasized the magazine’s focus on promoting Afro-positive content and showcasing the best of Africa on global platforms.

He lauded the ABLA winners as exemplars of progressive and transformational leadership in both business and policy.

Gathering of distinguished guests

The African Business Leadership Awards ceremony drew an impressive array of high-level business leaders and policymakers from across the continent.

Notable attendees included Lord Dolar Popat, a Member of the UK House of Lords and the British Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Rwanda and Uganda; Baroness Sandy Verma, Member of the UK House of Lords; and various esteemed Ministers and Officials from Mauritius, Madagascar, The Gambia, Liberia, and Mozambique, among others.

The event was graced by the presence of His Royal Majesty, Ògíame Atúwatse III CFR, Olu of Warri Kingdom, Nigeria, along with other dignitaries, CEOs, and leaders who represent the dynamic landscape of African leadership.
