U.S – Food safety solutions provider Neogen has introduced two new assays, Reveal for Histamine and Reveal Q+ for Histamine, for the rapid detection of histamine in fish species.
The Reveal for Histamine assay is a qualitative lateral flow test designed for visual screening of histamine at 50 parts-per-million (ppm) in scombroid species of fish, such as tuna and mahi-mahi.
This rapid test enables producers and distributors to quickly identify potential histamine contamination, ensuring consumer safety and health.
On the other hand, the Reveal Q+ for Histamine assay is a quantitative lateral flow test that can be read on Neogen’s Raptor Integrated Analysis Platform. It provides precise quantitative results for histamine in scombroid species of fish and dry animal protein.
This quantitative analysis offers a more comprehensive understanding of histamine levels, allowing for precise monitoring and control measures.
The assays utilize a water extraction method and deliver results in minutes, eliminating the need for chemical disposal and reducing testing time.
Addressing scombroid poisoning risk
Histamine levels can increase significantly in certain fish species during decomposition, and the consumption of histamine-contaminated fish can lead to scombroid poisoning in humans.
To mitigate this risk, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set an action level of 50 ppm for histamine in both domestic and imported fish.
Neogen’s new histamine detection assays enable producers and distributors to meet regulatory requirements effectively and ensure the safety of their products.
By implementing rapid testing solutions, the industry can proactively safeguard consumers from potential health hazards associated with histamine-contaminated fish.
John Adent, President and CEO of Neogen, emphasized the significance of these innovative assays in the company’s food safety testing portfolio.
“These two new tests are an excellent addition to our portfolio of food safety testing solutions, helping keep consumers safe and healthy.
“These rapid tests make it easy for producers and distributors to test for this toxin, backed by Neogen’s reputation for providing accurate and reliable results,” he said.
With the introduction of these rapid histamine detection assays, Neogen continues to advance food safety practices and support the industry in meeting regulatory standards.
The assays’ speed, ease of use, and reliability enable producers and distributors to efficiently test for histamine and maintain the highest quality standards for their products.
The company recently launched two innovative assays for the detection of natural toxins: Reveal Q+ for DON EndPoint and Reveal Q+ for Aflatoxin EndPoint.
Designed to offer accurate results in a matter of minutes, the Reveal Q+ EndPoint assays are quantitative lateral flow tests that are user-friendly and efficient.
These assays are specifically intended for use on Neogen‘s Raptor Solo Platform, catering to situations where increased workflow output is required.
