U.S – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has unveiled a comprehensive framework for systematic post-market reassessment of chemicals used in foods to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply by actively monitoring and assessing the risks associated with food ingredients and additives.

As part of this initiative, the FDA has released a public inventory of certain food ingredients and additives that have been deemed unsafe due to their unapproved status.

The inventory includes substances such as Cannabidiol (CBD), Melatonin, and Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHOs), among others. By highlighting these unapproved ingredients, the FDA aims to raise awareness among manufacturers and the public, potentially leading to the removal of unsafe products from the market.

Furthermore, the FDA has also provided lists of select chemicals that are currently under the agency’s review. These lists encompass substances considered Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), as well as food additives, food contact substances, and contaminants.

The FDA’s intent in sharing these lists is to address stakeholder concerns and prioritize the safety assessments of these chemicals.

In an effort to enhance the assessment of ingredients in foods on the market, the FDA is developing a comprehensive framework that involves routine surveillance of information to detect signals that may indicate potential risks.

By employing new tools and data in toxicology, exposure assessment, and modeling, the FDA aims to streamline risk assessment processes and incorporate cutting-edge methodologies, such as New Approach Methods (NAMs), to evaluate the safety of food ingredients without relying on animal testing.

Dr. Kristi Muldoon-Jacobs, Acting Director of the Office of Food Additive Safety, emphasized the importance of adequate resources and authorities to implement this enhanced framework successfully.

The FDA is actively exploring avenues to obtain better information on the post-market use of food ingredients from industry stakeholders, as current regulations do not require manufacturers to submit this information.

This significant step by the FDA showcases its commitment to safeguarding public health and underscores the agency’s dedication to employing innovative approaches in the evaluation of food ingredients.

The FDA intends to maintain the highest standards of food safety and protect consumers from unsafe substances by proactively identifying and assessing potential risks,

In recent years, concerns have arisen regarding the safety of certain food ingredients and additives, prompting calls for stricter regulatory measures. The FDA’s move to develop a comprehensive framework for enhanced safety assessment aligns with these concerns and demonstrates the agency’s responsiveness to evolving scientific knowledge and public demand.

The inventory of unapproved food additives released by the FDA provides a valuable resource for consumers, as it identifies ingredients that have not undergone the necessary safety assessments. This information empowers individuals to make informed choices about the food they consume and encourages manufacturers to prioritize the safety of their products.

It is important to note that the FDA’s inventory may not encompass all unsafe food additives, and the agency anticipates updating the list periodically as new information becomes available.

This commitment to ongoing monitoring and reassessment reflects the FDA’s dedication to staying at the forefront of food safety practices.

To modernize its approach to safety testing, the FDA will utilize emerging tools and data in toxicology and exposure assessment.

The inventory includes substances such as Cannabidiol (CBD), Melatonin, and Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHOs), among others.

The integration of New Approach Methods (NAMs), which aim to reduce animal testing and provide more accurate and efficient safety evaluations, demonstrates the agency’s commitment to embracing advancements in scientific research.

As the FDA continues to develop and implement its enhanced framework, it intends to engage with stakeholders and seek public input. This collaborative approach ensures that all perspectives are considered, fostering a transparent and inclusive decision-making process.

Consumers, manufacturers, and other industry stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about the FDA’s ongoing efforts to enhance food ingredient safety.

Regular updates, public notifications, and opportunities for feedback will be provided to ensure that all parties can actively contribute to the establishment of robust food safety standards.
