GHANA – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana has cautioned the public against the consumption of some Listeria laden sausages recalled by Italian authorities that is being circulated in Ghana’s market.
Two of the implicated batches of AIA Wudy and Pavo sausages, produced by Agricola Tre Vali, with an expiration date of November 30, 2022, are reported to have been imported to Ghana.
Following the recall campaigns currently underway in Europe and other nations, the FDA claims to have performed a market surveillance operation and discovered Pavo Frankfurt sausages with an expiration date of November 2022 in Ho in the Volta Region.
The products have since been detained for safe disposal. So far, no AIA Wudy sausages have been found on the Ghanaian market.
However, the FDA has ordered that anyone in possession of the aforementioned goods bring them right away to either their national headquarters or regional offices spread out around the nation.
“The FDA wishes to assure the public that its surveillance teams continue to monitor the markets for any of the above-mentioned products,” it concluded.
Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very dangerous for pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with compromised immune systems.
It is typically brought on by consuming unpasteurized milk products and inadequately treated deli meats.
Listeria bacteria are resistant to freezing and refrigeration. Therefore, those who are more susceptible to serious infections should refrain from consuming foods that are most likely to contain listeria bacteria.
Listeria infections rarely cause illness in healthy people, but the illness can be fatal to neonates, unborn children, and adults with compromised immune systems.
Other regions affected
Three people have died and more than 60 have fallen ill in a serious Listeria outbreak in Italy.
The Ministry of Health (Ministero della Salute) said there had been an upsurge in cases of listeriosis in various Italian regions, because of contamination of food by Listeria monocytogenes.
Chicken and turkey sausages with cheese have been distributed to 30 countries mostly across Europe including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Although authorities have not yet verified all the specifics, it is thought that the listeriosis outbreak is also affecting other European nations.
