INDIA – The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has called on manufacturers of soy products to apply for certification of their products and gain the ISI mark, even as consumers become more receptive to them.

Launched in 1955, the ISI mark certifies that a product conforms to an Indian standard (IS) developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

It is by far the most recognized certification mark in the Indian subcontinent.

In a webinar organized to create awareness about Indian standards on soy products, BIS said that the use of soybean is getting acceptance in the form of textured vegetable protein (popularly known as soy badi or soy nuggets), soy milk, Tofu, soy dahi, etc.

To maintain the quality and safety of these soy products, physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters and their test methods are standardized.

“Implementation and certification of the Indian standards on soy products will aid in integrating soy products into the Indian diet. Thus, enhanced quality and safety of the soy products will benefit the producer by commanding better prices and the end consumers will receive safe products, enhancing the overall public health,” the statement said.

BIS has published seven Indian standards for soy products like fat soy flour, soy milk, soy nuts, soy butter and soy amrakhand. The agency is in the process of developing standards for new soy products.

Meanwhile, India’s state government is taking efforts to ensure quality of services in all its departments and adherence to standards.

S.Krishnan, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries Department, highlighted the State government’s efforts to adhere to standards specified by BIS.

He lauded the initiatives of the BIS in implementing the Indian standards. The significance of Indian standards in providing quality products and services to consumers was underlined during the iconic week celebrations organized by Bureau of Indian Standards, Southern Region, as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ in the city.

Speakers from various sectors, including industrial bodies, elaborated on the role of Indian standards in the growth of industries in Tamil Nadu.

They noted that the industrial sector was able to scale up with the help of the Indian standards that were on par with global standards.

G.Bhavani, Head, BIS, Chennai branch office, made a presentation on the 75 years journey of BIS in contributing to national economy and quality certification.
